You don't need years of experience to look incredible in front of the camera. After shooting hundreds of sessions across New York City, I've noticed the same handful of techniques separate stiff, awkward photos from stunning, natural ones.
Here are 7 posing tips that will instantly level up your photos.
1. Shift Your Weight to One Leg
Standing with your weight evenly distributed looks rigid. Shift your weight to your back leg, pop the front hip slightly, and your body instantly creates an S-curve that adds dimension and movement.
2. Angle Your Body, Never Face Straight On
Turning your body 30-45 degrees from the camera slims your silhouette and creates depth. This is the single most impactful change most people can make.
3. Do Something With Your Hands
Hands hanging at your sides look awkward. Touch your hair, adjust a jacket, place a hand on your hip, or hold something. Give your hands a purpose and they'll look natural.
4. Chin Slightly Forward and Down
This might feel weird, but pushing your chin slightly forward and tilting it down eliminates double chins and defines your jawline. It's the "model secret" that photographers never stop reminding clients about.
5. Relax Your Face Before the Shot
Take a deep breath, let your shoulders drop, and soften your expression before the shutter clicks. Tension shows in photos more than you think. I always tell my models: "Give me the face you make when your favorite song comes on."
6. Use Movement
Some of the best shots happen between poses. Walk toward the camera, spin, laugh, toss your hair. Motion creates energy that static poses can't match. This is why my sessions feel more like conversations than rigid photo shoots.
7. Trust Your Photographer
The best models aren't the ones who memorize 100 poses. They're the ones who trust the process, stay present, and let the photographer guide them. That's where the magic happens.
