The One Memory Card Mistake That Will Cost You A Campaign

By Dante T9 · May 16, 2026 · 6 min read

Forget megapixels and ISO. The most critical, yet often overlooked, gear choice is the humble memory card. Get it wrong, and your entire shoot goes up in smoke.

Reliability Over Raw Speed

Your data's integrity is worth more than a few frames per second.
On-location / Studio
Secure unwavering critical

I've seen it too many times: photographers chasing the highest write speeds, only to have a card corrupt mid-shoot. Unless you're shooting 8K video all day, maxing out your camera's buffer isn't your main problem. Data integrity is.

Pro tip

Buy cards from reputable brands only – SanDisk Extreme Pro, Lexar Professional, Sony Tough. Never trust off-brand budget options, no matter the claimed specs.

Buffer Management, Not Burst Speed

A fast card clears the buffer, a slow card makes you wait.
Fast-paced shoots
Fluid responsive efficient

When a model hits that perfect pose, you need to capture a sequence. A slow card chokes your camera's buffer, forcing you to wait while it writes. A good card clears it quickly, so you're ready for the next shot without missing a beat. This is where speed matters.

Pro tip

If your camera supports dual card slots, configure it for simultaneous backup (RAW to slot 1, JPEG to slot 2, or both RAW for redundancy). It's saved my ass more than once.

Capacity vs. Risk

Don't put all your eggs in one oversized basket.
Any shoot
Measured pragmatic secure

It's tempting to grab one massive 1TB card and call it a day. But if that card fails, you lose everything. I prefer using multiple smaller cards (128GB-256GB) throughout a long shoot. If one goes, the damage is limited.

Long shoots, multi-day projects

Pro tip

Label your cards (e.g., 'Shoot 1 Card A,' 'Shoot 1 Card B') immediately after formatting and keep them organized. After a shoot, download, then re-format IN CAMERA.

CFexpress: The New Standard

Unleash the full potential of modern cameras, but check your wallet.
High-end production
Blazing professional demanding

For high-resolution video and ludicrous burst rates on newer cameras, CFexpress is the only way. These cards are stupid fast, but they're also stupid expensive. Make sure your camera actually benefits from them; don't buy one if your camera only takes SD.

4K/8K video, high-speed sports, intense fashion bursts

Pro tip

Always buy a CFexpress Type B card reader that matches the card's speed. A slow reader will bottleneck your workflow and negate the speed advantage.
