The Silent Language of Confidence at Castings
Feeling a knot in your stomach before a big casting? I've been there, a thousand times. After six years navigating those bustling waiting rooms, I've learned that true confidence isn't about being fearless; it's about mastering a few key practices that speak volumes without you saying a word.

The Power Stance
Before you even step into the room, your posture in the waiting area matters. Stand tall, shoulders back, chin slightly up. Avoid slouching or hunching over your phone.
Imagine a string pulling you gently from the top of your head – it instantly improves posture.
Eye Contact & The Silent Nod
When you're called in, make brief, warm eye contact with each person at the table. A small, polite nod as you enter and exit shows professionalism and acknowledges their presence.
Hold eye contact for just a second or two – enough to connect, not to stare.
The 'Know Your Angles' Drill
Many castings involve quick polaroids or digitals. Know your most flattering angles and how to transition smoothly. This isn't about 'posing,' but about presenting your best self naturally.
Practice in front of a mirror with your phone, taking quick snaps from different angles to see what works.
Controlled Breathwork
A racing heart can throw you off. Before you're called in, or even for a few seconds as you walk into the room, take a deep, slow breath from your diaphragm. It signals to your body that you're in control.
Inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 6. Repeat twice.
Your Portfolio as a Friend
Your book isn't just a collection of photos; it's a narrative. Know your key images, the ones that truly represent your range. Present it cleanly, holding it with confidence, ready to flip to a specific page if asked.
Mentally walk through your portfolio's flow beforehand, noting which images you'd highlight for different projects.
These five locations are the foundation of NYC editorial photography.
Master them and you have a portfolio that sells to any client in the city.
