Don't Be a Mark: The Enduring Gear Worth Buying Used
Forget the hype cycles. Some gear, regardless of marketing, is built to last. This isn't about finding a "deal;" it's about making smart investments that hold their value and perform day in, day out, long after the original owner upgrades.

Nikon D850/D810 Bodies
Before mirrorless became the hot topic, these were the kings. The D850's sensor is still best-in-class for resolution and dynamic range. The D810, a bit older, offers incredible value for its image quality. Both are built like tanks.
Check the shutter count. Anything under 150k is often a solid buy for a D850, less for a D810.
Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM
This lens is legendary for a reason. Tack sharp, fast autofocus, and that signature Canon L-series bokeh. The Mark II is the sweet spot – newer versions offer marginal improvements for significantly more cash. It just works.
Focus on glass condition. Minor barrel scratches are cosmetic; internal dust or fungus is a dealbreaker.
Profoto B1/B1X Strobes
Profoto isn't cheap, even used, but the B1 and B1X are investments. Their build quality, reliable TTL, and vast modifier ecosystem make them studio mainstays that endure heavy use. The battery tech is solid, even on older units.
Always test the battery life. Profoto batteries are pricey to replace, so factor that into your offer.
Leica M-Mount Lenses (Older Generations)
Leica glass doesn't depreciate like other brands. Older M-mount lenses (think Summicrons, Summiluxes) are still optical marvels. They might lack autofocus, but their rendering and build are unmatched. Buy smart, and it'll outlast you.
Research specific lens versions. Later versions often have improved coatings, but earlier ones can have unique rendering.
Gitzo Tripods
No frills, just rock-solid stability. Gitzo tripods, especially the carbon fiber models, are over-engineered in the best possible way. They shrug off abuse and hold heavy setups without a wobble. You buy one for life.
Check leg locks for smooth operation. Minor wear is fine, but sticky or loose locks can be a pain.
