The Direct Question
Beginners smile and nod through a vague creative deck so they do not seem demanding. Experienced talent and crew question the brief until the logistics, lighting constraints and deliverable formats are settled before rolling.
If a producer sends a vague moodboard, reply with three specific yes or no questions instead of a blanket 'looks great!'
The Overtime Boundary
Beginners stay an extra hour off the clock to show hustle. Calling 'wrap' on the scheduled minute shows you value your craft, your team's labor and industry standards.
Give the AD a calm 30-minute warning so the final shot list is prioritized without a scramble.
The High-Stakes No
If you say yes to every mid-tier commercial offer, your brand blurs into the background. Politely declining gigs that conflict with your aesthetic or creative standards builds a stronger reputation.
Decline without apologizing: 'This doesn't align with my current body of work, but keep me in mind for projects focused on [specific niche].'
Early Invoicing
Accounts payable does not care about creative flair if the invoice lacks a purchase order number or itemized usage rights. Producers rehire the talent whose paperwork needs no follow-up emails.
Attach your W-9 and direct deposit info to every invoice PDF as a second page so AP has nothing to chase.
Owning a Mistake
When a card corrupts, a wardrobe tear happens or a lighting cue fails, people-pleasers make excuses and shift blame. Take ownership quietly and right away, and offer two solutions. That shows you can lead under pressure.
Do not explain why something failed until the fix is done and the client is calm.
