Bronx Mural Locations for Fashion Photo Shoots
For editorial grit this season, skip DUMBO and Soho and go uptown. Big public murals make strong backdrops for high-fashion styling.

Hunts Point
The big warehouse walls along Spofford Avenue carry large graffiti murals. The scale is huge, so you have to shoot wide to get the model and the architecture in one frame.
Use the negative space where the concrete meets the paint to give the eye a place to rest.
Mott Haven
Around Alexander Avenue, old Bronx brownstones sit next to new community murals. It is softer and more editorial than the industrial zones, and good for close-up portraits with a sense of place.
Use the fire escapes as frames rather than background clutter.
Grand Concourse Underpasses
Under the Art Deco street level of the Grand Concourse there are pockets of mural work. Raw concrete pillars, shadows and bright paint make a natural studio lighting setup outdoors.
Expose for the highlights where the sun hits the mural and let the rest of the frame fall into deep shadow.
Riverdale Step Street Murals
The Bronx has outdoor step streets, and several have painted risers. Shooting from the bottom looking up gives a stretched perspective, with the stairs forming a continuous graphic pattern.
Have the model walk down toward you. You get real movement against the still pattern of the steps.
That's the inside look. Save this one for your next shoot.
