How to Feel Confident at a NYC Photoshoot

How to Feel Confident at a NYC Photoshoot

Almost everyone is nervous at the start of a shoot. In a city this crowded it is easy to feel like every passerby is watching, and to feel you cannot "turn it on" for the camera. Pros get this too, and so do people stepping in front of a camera for the first time. Here is what helps.

Before the shoot

  • Know why you are shooting. A portfolio, a personal brand or a new headshot each call for a different approach. Knowing your goal gives you something to hold onto.
  • Wear something you feel good in. Comfort matters, and so does liking how you look. If you are self-conscious about an outfit, it shows. Try your looks on beforehand and move around in them. Match them to the shoot, whether that is high-fashion grit in Bushwick or something more polished by Central Park.
  • Collect a few reference images. We often ask models to pull up images that inspire them. Not for poses, but for mood. How do those people look and feel? Think about bringing that energy in your own way.
  • Learn a little about the camera (optional). You do not need to be a photographer. But if you want to understand the craft, an entry-level full-frame like the Canon EOS R50 is a way to learn the basics. Knowing what your photographer is doing helps you feel like a collaborator.

On set

  • Tell us how you feel. Our job is to get the best out of you, and we cannot do that if we do not know what you are feeling. If you are uncomfortable, say so. If a pose feels awkward, say so. If you need a minute, take it. A good photographer wants that feedback.
  • Breathe. Nerves make breathing shallow. Slow, deep breaths calm you down and help you think clearly. We often guide models through this.
  • Move. Do not hold a pose. Move into it. Shift your weight, use your hands, run your fingers through your hair. Natural movement looks better than a stiff pose. We move around a lot too, looking for angles, and a comfortable strap like the Peak Design Camera Strap keeps us agile and focused on you.
  • Keep the in-between shots. Sometimes the unposed moments are the best ones. The real you, with your own expressions, is more interesting than a stiff ideal.

Body positivity and comfort

  • Focus on how a pose feels. Instead of checking the monitor all the time, notice whether you feel strong, graceful or playful. When you connect with the feeling, the look follows.
  • Find your angles. Everyone has sides they prefer. Try them out in a mirror at home. In the studio, with a backdrop like the Savage Seamless Background Paper, we control the environment, so we can work on your best presentation.
  • Trust your photographer. A good photographer guides you, suggests adjustments and finds poses that flatter you. Our goal is to make you look good, not expose flaws. We handle lighting, framing and some post-production with tools like Adobe Creative Cloud.

Mindset

The best images come from genuine self-assurance. If you walk in ready to try things and trust the process, it shows, and it is what separates a photograph from a snapshot. Whether we shoot on the Lower East Side or in a penthouse studio, you are there because you have something worth photographing.
