How To Prepare For Your First Professional Headshot Session in NYC

How To Prepare For Your First Professional Headshot Session in NYC

The difference between a headshot that books jobs and one that gets scrolled past usually comes down to preparation — not genetics, not luck, not expensive equipment. I've shot over a thousand headshot sessions in this city, and the clients who show up prepared consistently walk away with stronger images than the ones who wing it, regardless of how photogenic they think they are.

Your headshot is a visual handshake. In a city with this much competition — where casting directors flip through hundreds of faces before lunch — you need every possible advantage. Here's exactly how to prepare so you walk into that session confident and walk out with something that actually works.

Your Wardrobe: Dress for Success, NYC Style

This is where a lot of people get tripped up. My advice? Think versatility, comfort, and authenticity.

  • Bring Options, Seriously: Don't just show up with one outfit. Bring 3-5 different tops or looks. Think varying necklines (crew, v-neck, button-down), different colors, and textures. We can mix and match, and having choices means we'll find what truly shines on camera.
  • Color Palette: Solid colors are your best friend. Jewel tones (emerald, sapphire, ruby) or rich neutrals (charcoal, navy, deep brown) often photograph beautifully and make you pop against any backdrop, whether it's a sleek Midtown high-rise or the gritty charm of the Lower East Side. Avoid busy patterns, logos, or neon colors that can distract from you.
  • Layer Up: A blazer, a stylish cardigan, or a denim jacket can instantly transform a look and add depth. NYC is all about layers, right? It shows you're adaptable and can switch gears.
  • Comfort is Key: If you're fidgeting or uncomfortable, it'll show. Choose clothes that fit well, aren't too tight or too baggy, and allow you to move freely. You want to feel confident, not constrained.
  • Ironed & Clean: This might sound obvious, but wrinkled clothes are a no-go. Hang everything up carefully before you arrive.

Hair & Makeup: Enhance, Don't Transform

My philosophy is simple: I want to capture you on your best day.

  • Natural is Best: For women, opt for a natural makeup look that enhances your features rather than dramatically changing them. Think foundation that matches your skin tone, a touch of blush, mascara, and a neutral lip color. If you usually wear a bit more, that's fine, but avoid heavy contouring or overly dramatic eyes unless it's specifically for a character role.
  • Hair Prep: Arrive with your hair clean, dry, and styled how you usually wear it on a good day. Bring any products or tools you might need for touch-ups. For men, a fresh haircut a week or so before is ideal – not the day before!
  • Skin Care: Hydrate your skin in the days leading up to the shoot. A well-moisturized face is a happy face for the camera.

Rest & Hydration: Your Secret Weapons

This is non-negotiable, especially with the NYC hustle.

  • Get Your Zzz's: Aim for a solid 7-8 hours of sleep the night before. Dark circles and tired eyes are tough to edit out, and frankly, you deserve to feel refreshed.
  • Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate: Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your session. It helps your skin look clearer and more vibrant. Lay off the booze and excessive caffeine the night before.

Mindset: Confidence and Connection

This is where the magic truly happens.

  • Trust Your Photographer: You've chosen me for a reason! My job is to guide you, find your best angles, and elicit genuine expressions. Let go of any self-consciousness. We're a team.
  • Relax and Breathe: It's natural to feel a little nervous, but try to relax. Take a few deep breaths before we start. Think about something that makes you happy, confident, or determined.
  • Communicate Your Goals: What are you using this headshot for? LinkedIn? An acting portfolio? A personal branding refresh? Tell me! Knowing your goals helps me tailor the shoot to deliver exactly what you need. Share any inspiration you have, too.

The Day Of: Show Up Ready to Shine

  • Eat Lightly: Don't come on an empty stomach, but avoid a heavy meal right before. A light snack will keep your energy up.
  • Arrive On Time: This is NYC, we respect schedules! Arriving a few minutes early gives you time to decompress, check your wardrobe, and grab a glass of water.
