NYC Alleys for Fashion Shoots

By Dante T9 · Jun 10, 2026 · 6 min read

In summer, New York shows its character in the back streets more than on the broad avenues. These are alleys and mews that fashion editorials rarely use. Here are five, with the best time, lens and outfit for each.

Want to shoot at any of these with Dante's Models? Book a session or apply to be represented.

Cortlandt Alley's Dark Heart

Gritty and dark, in Tribeca
Tribeca, Lower Manhattan
Raw urban enigmatic

Cortlandt Alley has a reputation, but people rarely notice how much it offers. Past the street art, one stretch that is often overlooked has strong contrast between light and shadow. The light barely gets in, which makes a dramatic silhouette.

Best time
Late afternoon, 3-5 PM, when the sun's angle is sharpest
Lens
35mm or 50mm, to embrace the confined space without distortion
Outfit
Monochromatic, architectural lines to contrast the texture
Pro tip

Look for the subtle drips and aged brick; they're your uncredited co-stars.

Stone Street's Whisper

Cobblestones at sunrise
Financial District, Lower Manhattan
Historic charming secluded

Stone Street is known for outdoor dining. Early in the morning, before the tables are out and the crowds arrive, it is still and quiet, with a European feel that suits a shoot built around a story.

Best time
Sunrise, 6-7 AM, for empty streets and soft, directional light
Lens
85mm, to compress the perspective and isolate the model against the architecture
Outfit
Flowing fabrics, vintage-inspired pieces, or sharp tailoring
Pro tip

Capture the reflections in the wet cobblestones after a summer morning dew.

Doyers Street's Curve

A bend in Chinatown
Chinatown, Lower Manhattan
Cinematic vibrant mysterious

Doyers Street, known as the "Bloody Angle," draws tourists, but its sharp curve also makes a natural leading line that photographers who stick to predictable angles tend to miss. It works for a chase scene or a whispered secret in the summer sun.

Best time
Mid-morning, 9-11 AM, when the light hits the curve just right
Lens
24-70mm zoom, to play with the perspective of the bend
Outfit
Bold colors or patterns that pop against the street art and signs
Pro tip

Use the shop signs and hanging lanterns as natural frames and color accents.

Washington Mews' Hidden Gates

Ivy and gates in Greenwich Village
Greenwich Village, Manhattan
Elegant collegiate clandestine

Washington Mews sits behind gates that are often ajar, if you know when to look. It isn't an alley in the usual sense. It is a private cobblestone street with an old-world feel that seems out of place in summer Manhattan. Light filters through the mature trees.

Best time
Golden hour, 6-7 PM, for soft, warm light filtering through the leaves
Lens
85mm or 105mm, to achieve beautiful background blur and focus on the model
Outfit
Classic, refined pieces, light fabrics that catch the breeze
Pro tip

Look for shifts in light on the ivy-covered walls for texture.

Staple Street's Skybridge

The skybridge in Tribeca
Tribeca, Lower Manhattan
Industrial iconic architectural

Everyone photographs the Staple Street skybridge, but few capture how isolated it feels. In summer the street below is often quiet and the bridge stands alone, cutting across the narrow gap to make a strong frame for fashion.

Best time
Overcast day or late afternoon, to emphasize the structure without harsh shadows
Lens
Wide-angle (24mm or 35mm) to capture the full scale of the bridge and street
Outfit
Strong, sculptural pieces or something contrasting the industrial backdrop
Pro tip

Shoot from slightly below the bridge to exaggerate its imposing presence.

That's the inside look. Save this one for your next shoot.
And when you're ready to create something real in NYC, you know where to find us.
