Sleep Grooming and Wardrobe Planning for Headshots
A successful headshot relies on physical preparation long before the camera shutter clicks. Good rest, clean grooming, and fitted clothing prevent common delays and post-production issues. NYC studios like Dante's Models shoot this kind of session daily across Midtown and lower Manhattan.

Sleep Schedule and Hydration
Camera sensors register puffiness and dark circles under bright studio strobes. Aim for seven to eight hours of sleep for two consecutive nights before the shoot, rather than relying on the final night alone. Cut back on heavy sodium meals and alcohol forty-eight hours out, and drink plenty of plain water.
Keep an extra bottle of room-temperature water in your bag during your morning commute on the subway.
Haircuts and Facial Hair Management
Schedule a haircut four to six days before the session so the edges look natural rather than freshly sheared. For facial hair, trim or shave two to three hours before arrival using a new razor blade and a soothing balm. This prevents both midday five o'clock shadow and fresh razor burn marks under hot lights.
Bring your personal comb and styling product to the studio for quick touch-ups between setups.
Skin Prep and Shine Control
Do not introduce new chemical peels or strong skin treatments during the week of your session. Wash your face with a mild cleanser on the morning of the shoot and apply a light, non-greasy moisturizer. Bring blotting papers or translucent powder to tame excess oil on the forehead and nose.
Plain blotting papers remove oil faster than tissue paper without leaving white dust on dark suits.
Mid-Tone Solid Fabrics
Choose mid-tone colors like navy, slate blue, forest green, charcoal, or plum. Solid white can blow out under strobes, while solid black can lose all texture and merge into dark backdrops. Avoid tight herringbone patterns or micro-stripes, which create optical distortion on computer screens.
Transport your outfits on hangers inside a garment bag instead of folding them into a backpack.
Necklines and Layering Options
Bring three top options with distinct collar shapes to give your photo set variety. A classic crew neck, a fitted blazer, and an open-collar dress shirt provide different levels of formality. Make sure shirts fit flat across the shoulders without bunching when you sit upright.
Check that your undershirt is a V-neck so it remains completely invisible under an unbuttoned collar.
That's the inside look. Save this one for your next shoot.
