The Fake Light Formula Behind Flawless NYC Portraits
Most clients think great photos require a fancy camera and a sunny day. In reality, NYC’s towering architecture and unpredictable weather mean your photographer’s lighting modifiers—the giant white discs and black flags they bring on set—are doing 90% of the heavy lifting to make you look stunning.

The Giant Silver Reflector
When you are shooting midday portraits with the Manhattan Bridge behind you, the sun is directly overhead, casting nasty raccoon shadows under your eyes. A massive silver reflector bounces that harsh sunlight right back up, filling in dark circles and creating a bright, lively spark in your eyes without squinting.
Keep your chin slightly elevated to let the bounced light fully illuminate your face and smooth out your jawline naturally.
The Five-Foot Octabox
For high-end corporate headshots, we don't want harsh shadows or clinical office lighting. A five-foot octabox mimics the soft, wrapping light of a massive north-facing window, forgiving skin imperfections and making you look like you got eight hours of sleep, even if you spent the night prepping for a big pitch.
If you wear glasses, ask the photographer to angle the octabox slightly higher to eliminate annoying green glare from your lenses.
The Scrim Diffuser Panel
If you are planning a Sweet 16 or Quinceañera shoot in July, the noon sun is your worst enemy. Instead of fighting it, an assistant holds a large semi-translucent fabric scrim above you, instantly turning the harsh, burning sunlight into a soft, flattering glow that makes formal dresses look magical.
NYC studios like Dante's Models shoot this kind of session and rely heavily on these mobile diffusion panels to keep your makeup looking fresh and matte outdoors.
The Black V-Flat
Sometimes the best modifier is one that steals light rather than adding it. By placing tall black foam boards on one side of you, we absorb the bounced light bouncing off white gallery walls, creating rich, dramatic shadows that instantly define your cheekbones and give your portrait a high-fashion edge.
Wear solid, textured neutrals like a gray knit sweater or a dark blazer to maximize the editorial, three-dimensional look of this lighting.
That's the inside look. Save this one for your next shoot.
And when you're ready to create something real in NYC, you know where to find us.
