Thrift Store Wardrobe for Fall Fashion Photoshoots
Clean showroom samples look flat under low autumn sun. Worn pieces have more texture and read better on camera. Good fall editorial wardrobe can come out of $15 thrift bins across the outer boroughs. Here are five pieces to look for and where to look.

Oversized 1980s Men's Heavy Wool Overcoats
Vintage 80s overcoats are dense wool with broad shoulder pads that hold clean lines on camera, unlike flimsy modern tailoring. As temperatures drop, these big coats give female talent a high-fashion silhouette without pinned clamps.
Look in the men's 44L+ section only. Women's vintage is cut too narrow for the editorial drop-shoulder look.
Distressed Moto & Flight Leathers
New leather bounces strobe light with a plastic sheen that takes a lot of retouching. Real scuffs, faded collars and broken-in seams on 90s flight jackets catch hard directional light and add depth to a street portrait.
Skip anything labeled "vegan leather." Vintage polyurethane flakes and turns chalky under flash.
Chunky Fisherman & Cable-Knit Sweaters
Thick cream or oatmeal Irish knits add warmth and stand out against concrete in autumn palettes. The deep knit catches small shadows in natural light, so the sensor has real texture to record.
Buy them two sizes too big and fray the cuffs with a seam ripper for a relaxed look.
Washed Silk Scarves & Vintage Bandanas
When fall gusts pick up in New York, a $5 vintage silk scarf adds motion that turns a still portrait into a moving one. Washed silk catches the breeze better than stiff modern synthetic prints.
Spray the scarf lightly with static guard before shooting so it floats instead of clinging to the model's jawline.
Deadstock Pleated Trousers with High Rises
Vintage pleated slacks in gabardine or houndstooth drape with real weight when the model walks. The high waistline lengthens the legs on camera, so you need less extreme low-angle shooting.
Look for trousers with double forward pleats. They hold a crisp fold mid-stride.
That's the inside look. Save this one for your next shoot.
