What Casting Directors Look For in Studio Digitals
Casting calls move fast in New York, and reviewers make decisions on unedited polaroids before looking at creative work. Knowing how to present clean lines and accurate skin tones saves everyone time. Here is what directors check on their screens before booking an in-person call.

Accurate Skin Texture and Bone Structure
Reviewers zoom in to see real skin quality, jaw structure, and teeth. Heavy foundation or filtered digital files get discarded immediately because productions cannot guess what needs correction on set. Clean skin with basic moisturizer shows how light hits the face naturally.
Keep lip balm matte so the lips do not blow out under direct flash.
Visible Proportions in Profile
A direct side profile shows posture, neck length, and actual frame depth. Loose clothing hides shoulder alignment, which wardrobe departments need to evaluate before pulling samples. Stand straight with arms slightly forward so the torso outline stays clear.
Do not arch the lower back to appear taller, as directors spot pelvic tilt instantly.
Hair Length and Density Without Styling
Hair departments need to know what they are working with before booking call times. Casting sheets require one shot with hair down in its natural state, and one shot pulled cleanly into a low ponytail. Heat styling or wet product hides the actual volume.
Use a regular elastic without bright colors to keep the focus on the hairline.
Neutral Posture Under Flat Light
Editorial shapes belong in books, not in initial casting packets. Directors look for symmetrical shoulders, relaxed hands, and weight balanced evenly on both feet. Posing angles make clients suspect a model is hiding measurements.
Let fingers fall open naturally at the sides instead of clenching fists or tucking thumbs.
A Full Smile Showing Teeth
Commercial clients need to see dental alignment and how the eyes respond when the face smiles. A relaxed, open smile shows warmth that high-fashion editorial shots usually avoid. It separates print models from runway-only talent.
Exhale right before the shutter clicks to avoid tension around the jaw muscles.
That's the inside look. Save this one for your next shoot.
