Fashion Shoot Pre-Production: What to Settle First
A shoot is mostly decided at a table before the strobes fire. These are the five things we settle in pre-production for a fashion campaign.
Want to shoot at any of these with Dante's Models? Book a session or apply to be represented.
The Gutted Moodboard Audit
Every concept deck starts bloated with cinema stills and archival Vogue spreads. In pre-pro, the lead photographer and stylist cut any reference that relies on studio tricks we will not have time to rig on location.
If an image needs an explanation of why it works, cut it from the wall.
The Sun-Path Interrogation
Mid-autumn light in New York cuts between glass towers. The gaffer and DP spend twenty minutes mapping how the shadow from a scaffolding rig three blocks over will land on the model's cheekbones by 3:15 PM.
Scout the exact corner at the planned shoot hour, not during your lunch break.
The Wardrobe Triage Protocol
The wardrobe stylist pulls archival coats that weigh fifteen pounds, which starts a conversation about model movement and wind resistance. We work out sleeve drape against camera angles so the silhouette reads cleanly in gusts.
Pin the back of oversized outerwear to create structure without losing the front line.
The Contingency Weather Pact
October cold fronts can turn crisp golden foliage into a soaking grey day overnight. The producer writes two call sheets: one for open sky, and one mapped under subway trestles and covered loading docks.
A covered industrial alleyway costs less than an indoor studio hold.
The Department Head Handshake
Minutes before the crew leaves, the photographer, first AC and producer agree on the one hero frame that justifies the budget. They also agree which secondary shots get dropped if the client's hair and makeup runs an hour over.
Pick your sacrifice shots early so you do not scramble when you are running twenty minutes behind.
That's the inside look. Save this one for your next shoot.
And when you're ready to create something real in NYC, you know where to find us.
