How to Walk the Runway: Five Tips
Six years ago I fumbled through my first runway show, sure I was about to trip. Here is what I learned the hard way.

Shoulders Back, Not Stiff
Imagine a string pulling you gently up from the crown of your head. Keep your shoulders relaxed and slightly back, not hiked up to your ears. It opens your chest and you look more commanding.
Stand against a wall with your heels, calves, glutes, shoulders and head touching it lightly. Then walk away and keep that alignment.
The 'One Line' Illusion
Walk as if you are placing one foot directly in front of the other on an imaginary straight line. You get a natural hip sway that adds movement without looking forced, and it elongates your silhouette.
Look a few steps ahead, not at your feet. It keeps you on the line and keeps your gaze up.
The Power Pause at the End
When you hit your mark, do not just stop. Plant your feet and hold your pose for about 2-3 seconds, long enough for the camera flashes to catch you. Then turn. Do not rush it.
Take a mental breath before you turn. That short stillness lets the clothes be seen.
Confident Eyes, Not Empty
Do not stare blankly, and do not avoid eye contact completely. Pick a few spots in the audience, or the camera lens if you know where it is, and hold a steady gaze for a split second.
I once stumbled on the runway and recovered by locking eyes with an editor in the front row. Their attention moved from my misstep to my presence.
The Return Walk Rhythm
The walk back counts as much as the walk out. Keep your posture and your pace. Do not slouch or speed up after the turn. You are on display until you are completely off the runway.
Use the walk back to get ready for your next look, or just to decompress while still carrying the brand's look.
That's the inside look. Save this one for your next shoot.
