Getting signed by a New York agency takes good photos, some research and a professional attitude. Looks are only part of it. Here are the steps we would follow.
Portfolio shots NYC agencies want
Your portfolio is your calling card. Here is what every NYC modeling agency expects to see:
- Clean Headshots: High-quality and natural. One smiling, one serious, both showing your face clearly with no heavy makeup and no distracting background.
- Full-Body Shots: Agencies use these to judge your build and proportions. Wear form-fitting clothes, such as jeans and a plain t-shirt or a simple swimsuit, and shoot from the front, side and back.
- Lifestyle & Editorial Shots: Lifestyle shots show you natural and relatable in everyday scenes. Editorial shots, even from test shoots, show you can handle high-fashion concepts and direction.
- Movement Shots: Agencies want to see how you move. Walking, dancing or flowing from pose to pose all work.
- "Digitals" or "Polaroids": Raw, unedited photos in natural light against a plain background. They show agencies what you look like without styling or retouching. Include a full set: headshot (smiling and serious), full body (front, side, back) and profile. Always wear simple, form-fitting clothes.
A few well-shot, varied images beat a large pile of mediocre ones. Pay for professional photography.
Preparing for agency submission photos
Show your real self, cleanly.
- Wardrobe: Classic, form-fitting, neutral clothing: black jeans, a white tank top or t-shirt, a simple black dress or a plain swimsuit. Skip busy patterns, logos and oversized clothes that hide your shape.
- Makeup: Minimal and natural, unless an editorial look is requested. A clean face lets agencies see your skin tone and features. For men, no makeup is usually best.
- Hair: Clean, simply styled and in its natural texture. For digitals, show it both up and down.
- Posing practice: Practice in a mirror. Work on posture, expressions and angles. Agencies like models who take direction but also bring their own personality to a pose.
- Rest and water: A good night's sleep and plenty of water show in the photos.
- Bring options: Pack a few extra wardrobe choices and be open to the photographer's suggestions.
Submission photos, especially digitals, are usually an agency's first look at you.
Researching NYC agencies
Not every agency fits every model.
- Identify Your Niche: High fashion, commercial print, catalog, fitness, plus-size, petite or something else? Agencies specialize, so research the ones that represent models with your look and goals.
- Top NYC Agencies: Start with IMG Models, Elite Model Management, Ford Models, Wilhelmina Models, The Society Management, DNA Model Management and Next Model Management. These are some of the biggest in New York. Boutique agencies may give you more personal attention, so look at them too.
- Review Their Roster: Browse each agency's current models. If you see people with a similar look, height and style, you may fit.
- Understand Their Submission Process: Most prefer online submissions. Follow their instructions exactly. An unsolicited email or an unannounced visit can disqualify you.
- Networking: Agents are hard to reach directly as a newcomer, but photographers, stylists and other aspiring models in New York can give you insights or referrals. Go to industry events if you can, and stay professional.
- Online presence: Instagram works as a living portfolio, and agents often check social media before they sign someone. Keep it professional.
Be patient. If an agency says no, use it to adjust your approach.
What agencies look for besides looks
- Personality & Confidence: Agencies want models who are comfortable in front of the camera and in social and professional settings. A positive attitude helps.
- Professionalism: Punctuality, reliability, good communication and a strong work ethic. Modeling is a business, and agencies need to trust you with their name on every job.
- Drive & Ambition: NYC is competitive. Agencies want models who push their own careers and bounce back from setbacks.
- Adaptability & Coachability: Can you take direction and try different creative ideas? Easy-to-work-with models are valuable.
- Unique Selling Proposition (USP): A distinctive feature, an interesting background, a skill or real charisma. Agencies look for the "it" factor that sets you apart from thousands of others.
- Good Health & Stamina: Long hours, travel and constant movement are part of the job.
An agency is investing in you, so it wants someone good to have on the roster and good to work with.
The agency meeting
If an agency invites you in, that is a real step forward. Treat it that way.
- Be on time: Arrive on time, if not 10-15 minutes early. Lateness tells them you are unprofessional before you speak. New York traffic and transit are unpredictable, so plan your route.
- Dress simply: Clean and flattering, smart casual: jeans and a nice top, or a simple dress. They need to see your figure and style. Minimal makeup and clean hair still apply.
- Bring your book: A physical portfolio should be organized and clean. A digital one should open fast. Always bring your digitals/polaroids.
- Confident, not arrogant: Make eye contact, shake hands if it fits and listen.
- Be yourself: They want your actual personality.
- Prepare to talk about yourself: Expect questions about your interests, hobbies and why you want to model. Have short, honest answers ready.
- Ask questions: For example, how the agency develops its models, what it specializes in, or what it sees for you.
- Follow up: Send a brief thank-you email within 24 hours.
