The Jewel-Tone Silk or Matte Poplin
True black absorbs light and goes flat on camera, while stark white can blow out your highlights under strobes. Try jewel tones like deep emerald, sapphire or warm terracotta, which suit a range of skin tones and add life to your eyes.
If you wear dark neutrals, pick charcoal gray or deep navy. They hold shadow detail that pure black loses.
Subtle Architecture in the Neckline
Headshots depend on the neckline because the crop usually lands mid-chest. Avoid floppy collars or deep plunge cuts that disappear below the crop line and make you look bare-shouldered.
Check your neckline in the mirror while leaning forward slightly. The camera sits higher than you think and catches collar sag right away.
Mid-Weight Textures Over Flat Synthetics
Polyester and cheap shiny knits bounce flash unpredictably and can make clothes look inexpensive under multi-light setups. Fine-gauge cashmere, brushed wool, raw linen and structured crepe catch small shadows and read as better fabric.

The Two-Second Tailored Layer
A standard $350 to $700 NYC headshot session usually leaves time for two quick looks, so your top layer does the work. Start with a fitted base layer for a modern, approachable portrait, then add a tailored jacket for a board-ready one.
Make sure your jacket fits across the shoulders when you sit. Off-the-rack jackets often buckle at the back of the neck when you sit on an apple box.
Intentional, Low-Profile Accents
Large chandelier earrings, reflective statement necklaces and busy micro-houndstooth prints cause color artifacts and pull attention from your expression. Stick to brushed gold or silver studs, thin chains and glasses with an anti-reflective coating.
If your glasses don't have anti-reflective coating, pop out the lenses or borrow a lensless display pair from an optical shop for the hour.
