What a 14-Hour Model Day in NYC Looks Like

By Dante T9 · Aug 28, 2026 · 5 min read

Summer modeling in New York means train transfers, garment bags and industrial fans. Below is a sample day: a 7:00 AM call time in Greenpoint, street castings in Soho in the afternoon, and the agency polaroid wall at night.

Want to shoot at any of these with Dante's Models? Book a session or apply to be represented.

The day starts early in the hair and makeup chair, with no product on your skin and a lot of water in you from the day before. In July you are racing the sun coming through east-facing factory windows, to get soft lookbook frames before the room turns into an oven.

Best time
07:00 AM to 09:30 AM
Lens
50mm f/1.2 for fast natural light portraits before strobe setup
Outfit
Oversized button-down that won't ruin hair when pulled over the head
Pro tip

Keep sheet masks in your tote on ice. Ten minutes on the G train will reduce under-eye puffiness from the heat.

E-commerce and lookbook shoots are cardio. You hit a new micro-pose every three seconds while the digital tech calls out crop marks. By look twenty-five your feet are taped, and a box fan is aimed below the waist so the styling stays crisp.

Best time
10:30 AM to 01:30 PM
Lens
24-70mm f/2.8 locked at f/8 on tethered Profoto packs
Outfit
Nude seamless undergarments and easy-off slip-on heels
Pro tip

Bring your own silicone heel protectors. Sample size shoes rarely match your actual foot size.

Chaotic Unforgiving Fast

Two go-sees land in the agency app with a 45-minute window, and you sprint down Broadway through tourists in 88-degree humidity. Blot sweat in the stairwell, swap sneakers for heels at the door and shoot three clean digitals in front of a white wall.

Best time
02:00 PM to 04:00 PM
Lens
35mm f/1.4 capturing quick candid street transitions
Outfit
Form-fitting black tank, raw denim, and casting heels in a canvas tote
Pro tip

Do not put your heels on until you reach the agency buzzer. Saving your arch on city pavement keeps your posture straight for the booker.

The paid work is done, but building the portfolio is not. This is when newer models team up with photographers to shoot on the sidewalk. Neon-lit fruit markets and narrow alleys, with golden light bouncing off the fire escapes.

Best time
05:30 PM to 07:30 PM
Lens
85mm f/1.8 isolating subject against bustling city backgrounds
Outfit
Archival vintage pull mixed with thrifted streetwear
Pro tip

Use the reflection of passing yellow cabs to throw warm, moving bounce light onto your face.

Stark Clean Routine

The last stop before the train home is the agency polaroid wall under flat fluorescent tubes. You update your current skin, hair length and measurements. There is no filter, no creative lighting and no styling, just a record of how you look before tomorrow's call sheet arrives.

Best time
08:00 PM to 09:00 PM
Lens
Fixed 50mm portrait focal length under uncalibrated ceiling light
Outfit
Classic simple black two-piece swimwear or clean neutral basics
Pro tip

Keep your expression neutral and your jawline engaged instead of forcing a smile. Clients look at bone structure first.

That's the inside look. Save this one for your next shoot.
And when you're ready to create something real in NYC, you know where to find us.
