The Contract Clause That Silently Kills Your Buyout Rate
Agencies won't always save you from bad paperwork, especially when a client promises 'great exposure' alongside a vague usage agreement. If you don't know how to spot predatory booking terms before signing, you are actively giving away your image rights for free.

The 'In Perpetuity, All Media' Blanket Trap
If a contract lists usage as 'in perpetuity throughout the universe across all media existing or hereafter devised,' run the math again. That means the brand can stick your face on billboards in 2045 without paying you another dime, effectively locking you out of conflicting brand deals in that category forever.
Cap usage at 12 to 24 months with explicit renewal options attached to clear, scaled buyout rates.
The Uncapped Day Rate with No Overtime Structure
Call sheets that specify a flat day rate without stating a maximum hour limit (typically 8 or 10 hours) are a massive red flag. Production will run over, hair and makeup will lag, and you will end up working a 15-hour day for half your hourly worth.
Ensure the agreement explicitly states overtime kicks in after hour 8 at 1.5x the hourly equivalent rate.
The Deferred Payment 'Upon Brand Sales' Pitch
Never work on a promise that your compensation is contingent on the product selling, the campaign going viral, or the brand securing funding. If a business cannot afford standard talent rates, they do not have a viable production budget.
Require a 50% deposit upfront for any brand operating without an established agency record.
The Ghost Production Team and Missing Call Sheets
If the producer cannot provide a detailed call sheet 24 hours prior with named crew, producer contact details, client info, and exact location permits, the shoot is operating unprofessionally. Anonymous crew lists mean zero accountability if things go wrong on set.
Always forward the complete call sheet and location address to a trusted third party before stepping onto set.
That's the inside look. Save this one for your next shoot.
